Employers on Facebook
Me: Not judging... but why is it that whenever you post something on your wall, you're almost always frustrated with someone, and venting your anger out into a public forum? Maybe a tumblr would be better for venting things like that.
Him: Ifyou don't like what I post or the manner in which I post it feel free to use the delete/unfriend button. Its not venting my anger out onto a public forum because FB is a friend type of thing but back on topic I'm posting it on the off chance the person it is about will notice what they have done wrong and repremend it
Me: Public as in when anyone you have friended(or potential employers and police, who don't even need to have you friended) can see it. I don't personally have a problem with it, I just wondered if you would be worried about your close friends or potential employers seeing such things. And worse, what those posts may imply about your personality to them. :/ I understand wanting the person to fix their issues though, especially when they refuse to actually talk to you about it. It's your business what you post on your wall, and if you're trying to accomplish that I understand. Just I think a more private website like Tumblr would be both a more expressive way to vent your frustration, and one that would be much less likely to be seen by employers, provided you don't hook it up to your FB.
Him: Ok a potential employer that looks someone up on FB is beyond stupid. My personality comes through when I talk and i how I. Afct shows my intentions. For someone to read a post and then make an assumpation as to what it means or as to what is truely going on in my head is retarded. If an employer wants to look me up on FB then that tells me they are snooping for a reason not to hire me and if that's the case I don't want to work for them.I don't know you and you don't know me so don't assume you do.My close friends know me for me and they know I have a dark side and accept me.I don't give 2 shits about what an employer thinks about me due to stalking a FB profile.
Me: I'm not assuming I know you. I simply know that it is common procedure at most companies to look up the FB's of people they seriously intend to hire. Doing so gives them a clear image of how responsible a person is, which is why I keep my FB so clean. Apologies if my post offended you, I only did it out of concern. Thinking that you probably didn't know they did that.
Him: I'm a lot older than you and your wrong.A company by california law can't make a decision based on a forum. Its illegal. So once again you have proven that your stupid. To assume someone is how they act over the internet is an irrogant thing to do.So I don't know what kind of companies you apply for but if they do look you up on FB they have to put a disclaimer on the app you fill out.And finding someone on FB does not give a company a clear image of anything at all except what they do in their FREE time.A company can't make a decision on how responsible a person I based on how they act off the clock. It would be an biased decison. That like saying a 40 year old convicts profile was clean of any drug or illegal suspicions so it is safe to assume he is as well. That is a half baked decision at best.
Me: It is...? I just remember hearing from, well, everyone(including teachers) that they did that. I'll admit though that I haven't done any research because i didn't think there was any chance at all that any laws would be in place about it. I've never stated at any point that them making decisions based on the contents of our FB's was a smart or valid thing to do, rather, I've been as annoyed at the prospect as you seem to be. You don't need to make such a strong argument against it. Lastly, I'm sorry, but your age has nothing to do with it. Age does not equal intelligence, or even maturity. Would you be able to refer to the actual law so I can look it up? That way I can correct my friends who've been telling me they do that. Thanks.
Him: Your right age has nothing to do with maturity wich by the way was never the arguement.Age has everything to do with experience on the job.Teachers tend to lie about things.Such as a permanet record. There is no such thi7ng.The last thing I would do is listen to a teacher in reguards to the workforce.Grow up

In the end, the top answer on this page describes it quite well. Perhaps officially, its not legal to make a decision based upon someone's FB, but an employer does not have to state a reason to not hire someone. Nor can you prove that they didn't hire you because of what they saw on your facebook. That's all I wanted to warn you about. I apologize again, since I have obviously offended you. Also, I admire you for sticking to your guns, and hope that nothing posted online for everyone to see ever affects you adversely.
If there is an actual law you can cite specifically stating that employers cannot even look up peoples information online, then please find it and share a link with me. I was unable to find anything of the sort when I looked myself, and I'd hate to be misinformed.

I think I've done a wonderful job of keeping calm and not being baited into an argument, but who else thinks that he's overreacting a little? I mean, I know some people get defensive when criticized, but...
Also, does what he said have any merit at all? I don't want to directly challenge him in the status, but I haven't heard anything about the legality of employers looking on FB even once before here. Plenty on the morality, none on the legality.

Oh dear god. Mine even has a hidden thing under the faucet for the bath you have to pull down. Then one twisty nob for water pressure, and a fucking lever to determine temperature. NO one would know how to activate the shower part if I didn’t tell them.

True gender equality is actually perceived as inequality. A group that is made up of 50% women is perceived as being mostly women. A situation that is perfectly equal between men and women is perceived as being biased in favor of women.
And if you don’t believe me, you’ve never been a married woman who kept her family name. I have had students hold that up as proof of my “sexism.”
My own brother told me that he could never marry a woman who kept her name because “everyone would know who ruled that relationship.” Perfect equality – my husband keeps his name and I keep mine – is held as a statement of superiority on my part.

I might have reblogged this already but it’s so good I don’t care.

Also the study where they had women and men talking in a discussion and when women spoke around 30% of the time, men perceived them as dominating the discussion. They didn’t consider it “equal” until something like 5-10% of women talking.

Now apply that to racism! Try and see how people react if a conversation is exactly 50% white people 50% POC. I imagine the reaction will be quite similar

Snack (1:00 PM)

  • 5 small mushrooms
  • 4 small stalks of celery

Late Lunch (4:00 PM)

Late Dinner (10:00 PM)

  • 1 Chicken Breast
  • A yam
  • A bag of Skittles (!)

Water…

How… do you even eat anything more after an apple? o.o At least when its breakfast for me, once I eat ONE, I’m done. I’m full until lunchtime…. maybe the apples I eat are larger… or cuz I’m still not used to them? Idk. Sometimes i can’t even finish one.

I’m sorry sir, but you’ll have to cut your hair to work here.

If you didn’t know this about me, sexism is one of my largest pet peeves. In fact, any form of discrimination is a LARGE problem with me. Saying anyone can’t do anything based on ANYTHING other than their actual ability to do the job just ticks me off. So when I was in the line just now at Ralphs, and learned that I’d need to cut my hair for the job, naturally I didn’t take it well.

Me: Do girls also need to cut their hair to that length?

Her: No… but its a health requirement or something.

Me: I don’t see any girls in hairnets, is that required?

Her: No, of course not. But its not an option for men, they’d have to cut their hair. Ralphs looks for lean cut people.

At this point, I shut up. This person didn’t make the policies, and whether she agreed with them or not was no excuse to vent my anger on her. As I know from my friends who work behind the counter, they get enough of that about things both more and less ridiculous than what I was angry about.

Until then, I had been considering cutting my hair. Peer pressure everywhere told me I should, and my dad and our roommate had already stated it would be needed to be taken seriously for a job. That at the very least, it would help. The moment I heard that a few minutes ago in that store though, every inch of me decided at once.

I will not cut my hair. Any job that hires me based on anything other than my ability to work, I will not take. I want a job, but I will not go against my principles and work in a sexist or discriminating environment.

Who else fails to see how long hair hinders a males ability to work? People have different fashion sense, and some, like me, do not fit into the male stereotype. I feel even worse for possible crossdressers or transgenders who want to work. To force a person to look a certain way depending on his gender is cruelty, and I cannot see it any other way.

What does everyone else think about this?
